Technical launch of Explora III, coin ceremony for Explora IV and steel cutting for Explora V. A €3.5 billion investment with an estimated economic impact in Italy of more than €15 billion.

Genova – Three ceremonies in one marked the progress of Explora Journeys, the luxury cruise brand of MSC Group. The Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente hosted the technical launch of Explora III, the coin ceremony for Explora IV and the steel cutting that starts the construction of Explora V.

The first two ships, Explora I and Explora II, are already in service. Explora III will be christened in 2026, and the following ships will enter service by 2028, completing a fleet of six. Five of the six ships are being built at Italian shipyards in Genova, a clear sign of the strategic importance of the national shipbuilding industry.

The total investment of €3.5 billion generates economic, technological and employment activity in Italy estimated at more than €15 billion.

As Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Passenger Division of MSC Group, put it: “Two events of this scale, so close together, show the success of our luxury brand. We are putting our vision into practice – and quickly: to redefine luxury ocean travel.”

The project also includes a collaboration with Chimento Design, a company based in Liguria that specialises in the supply and production of high-end marine furniture and fit-outs. The company has consolidated its presence in the luxury cruise sector through bespoke technical supplies and a tailored approach that meets the aesthetic and functional requirements of new-generation ships.

Chimento Design’s contribution is an integral part of the process that is making Italian shipbuilding a point of reference for the luxury cruise sector.
